According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu is believed to have incarnated on earth in various avatars to restore balance and righteousness in the world. The primary reason for his incarnations is to protect dharma (righteousness) and destroy evil.
It is believed that Lord Vishnu has appeared in ten primary avatars, known as #Dashavatara, which are:
#Matsya Avatar: Lord Vishnu took the form of a fish to save the world from a great flood.
#Kurma Avatar: In this form, Lord Vishnu took the shape of a tortoise to help the Devas and Asuras during the churning of the ocean.
#Varaha Avatar: Lord Vishnu appeared as a boar to rescue the earth from being drowned by the demon Hiranyaksha.
#Narasimha Avatar: Lord Vishnu took the form of a half-man, half-lion to protect Prahlada and kill his demon father Hiranyakashipu.
#Vamana Avatar: In this avatar, Lord Vishnu appeared as a dwarf Brahmin and asked for three steps of land from the demon king Bali. When Bali agreed, Vamana grew in size and covered the entire universe with his two steps.
#Parashurama Avatar: Lord Vishnu took this form to annihilate the evil Kshatriyas and restore order in the world.
#Rama Avatar: Lord Vishnu appeared as the perfect human being, Rama, to kill the demon king Ravana and establish dharma.
#Krishna Avatar: Lord Vishnu appeared as the mischievous yet charming Krishna to destroy evil and guide humanity towards a life of righteousness.
#Buddha Avatar: In this form, Lord Vishnu appeared as Buddha to teach people the path of non-violence and self-realization.
#Kalki Avatar: Lord Vishnu will appear as Kalki in the future to destroy evil and restore balance to the world.
Apart from these ten, Lord Vishnu is also believed to have appeared in several other avatars, such as
#Mohini Avatar: This is an additional avatar of Lord Vishnu where he appeared as a female to help the Devas and Asuras during the churning of the ocean.
#Hayagriva Avatar: This is another additional avatar of Lord Vishnu where he appeared as a horse-headed deity to retrieve the Vedas stolen by demons.
The stories behind each of these avatars vary, but they are all believed to be manifestations of the divine in different forms to restore balance and order in the world.
